Abstract:
This panel is about understanding and challenging the effects of imperialism, which include colonialism, racism, and other forms of oppression that have led to underdevelopment in post-colonial societies. It focuses on how these historical issues continue to influence the modern world, especially in how countries interact and manage their internal affairs.
The panel will look into the relationship between Africa and East Asia, aiming to provide a clearer and more detailed view of their diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties. This part of the discussion aims to question and offer new perspectives on how these continents relate to each other, moving beyond the usual narratives.
A key theme is the philosophy of "Vivre libre ou mourir" (live free or die), originating from the Haitian Revolution. This principle is used to examine the foundations of decoloniality—a movement aiming to detach from colonial ways of thinking and acting, especially in knowledge, power, and societal norms. The panel will explore how this principle can help create a society that goes beyond the limitations set by colonial history.
Another important discussion revolves around the state's role in countries like Nigeria. The panel will argue that the Nigerian state's failure to implement policies that benefit its citizens is not due to incapability but a lack of interest. This reflects broader issues of post-colonial statehood and how the state can become a tool for the elite to maintain power and control, often at the expense of the general population.
Lastly, the panel will examine Taiwan's political identity and how different political parties’ stances towards China affect the country's internal unity and external relations. This discussion aims to show how adopting dominant political ideals without critical examination can deepen divisions within a state and affect its stability and security.
Overall, the panel seeks to uncover and discuss complex issues related to colonialism's lingering effects, the challenges of decoloniality, and the intricate dynamics of international relations and state policies in a post-colonial world.
