Abstract:

The global demographic landscape is experiencing a significant shift characterized by the aging of societies, and India is no exception to this trend. Projections from a 2009 United Nations report suggest that by 2050, the global elderly population will reach an astounding 2 billion, a substantial increase from the 737 million recorded in 2010. This demographic transformation is accompanied by broader societal changes, including globalization, urbanization, and migration, which have led to notable shifts in family structures and caregiving arrangements for the elderly population. These changes, coupled with evolving cultural norms emphasizing independence, have placed an urgent need for innovative solutions to bridge the caregiving gap. Objectives: Exploring Holistic Care Models: The panel aims to delve into holistic care models that extend beyond traditional medical interventions. By incorporating physical, mental, and social well-being into the care paradigm, we can better address the multifaceted needs of the elderly. Panelists will discuss successful case studies and innovative models that prioritize a comprehensive approach to aging, considering cultural and societal nuances. Technology Integration in Elderly Care: In the contemporary era, technology plays a pivotal role in transforming various aspects of our lives. The panel will explore how technological advancements can be harnessed to enhance elderly care, with a specific focus on the Indian context. Topics may include telemedicine, smart home solutions, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence applications tailored to meet the specific needs of the aging population in India and beyond. Empowering Caregivers: Caregivers are the backbone of elderly care, and their well-being is crucial to the quality of care provided. The panel will discuss strategies and support systems that empower caregivers, recognizing their vital role in the overall care ecosystem. This may include tailored training programs, mental health support, and community initiatives aimed at fostering a supportive environment for caregivers, particularly in the context of the evolving family structures in India. Addressing Cultural and Social Perspectives: Cultural and social factors significantly influence how societies perceive and address aging. The panel will engage in a cross-cultural examination of elderly care, acknowledging diverse perspectives and discussing approaches that respect cultural nuances. This exploration will help identify culturally sensitive strategies for providing effective and inclusive elderly care, with a specific focus on the Indian cultural context. Policy Implications and Advocacy: Effective elderly care necessitates a supportive policy framework. The panel will discuss current policies related to elderly care in India and globally, exploring opportunities for advocacy and reform. By bringing attention to policy gaps and proposing evidence-based recommendations, the panel aims to contribute to the development of more robust and responsive policies for aging populations, ensuring a dignified and supportive environment for the elderly. To conclude, the "Navigating Ageing" panel aspires to foster a dynamic conversation that transcends disciplinary boundaries. By integrating insights from healthcare, technology, sociology, and policy, the panel seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of contemporary perspectives on elderly care, with a specific focus on the Indian context. As societies worldwide grapple with the challenges of an aging population, this panel will contribute to shaping a future where elderly individuals can age with dignity, supported by innovative and culturally sensitive care practices.
