This paper explores the ethical and methodological dimensions inherent in megalithic research, drawing from empirical fieldwork conducted in Chotanagpur, India. It begins by outlining the challenges faced and negotiated by researchers during the pilot study phase, meticulously analyzing the nuanced complexities that arise at this foundational stage of inquiry. The pilot study phase provides scope to fine-tune methodologies and anticipate potential ethical dilemmas before embarking on larger-scale fieldwork. The complexities faced during this nascent stage are manifold, encompassing the delicate decisions surrounding selection or rejection of study areas, shortlisting of resident communities, formulation of research questions, selection of theoretical frameworks, and most importantly, choice of research tools. Each decision carries objective and ethical implications that require careful navigation to ensure the meticulousness and integrity of the research process. All these concerns have been discussed in the initial section of the paper. Transitioning forward, the paper presents a comprehensive examination of the challenges and ethical considerations encountered during the main phase of research, wherein extensive fieldwork encompassing ten districts within the state of Jharkhand, India was conducted. By integrating theoretical frameworks with real-world complexities encountered during fieldwork, this section contributes to scholarly discourse on megalithic research methodologies by shedding light on the intricate interplay of theory and practice, highlighting the need for adaptive methodologies that are responsive to the dynamic requirements of fieldwork. Also, the thin line between ethical correctness and practicality of data amassing has been given special impetus in this section of the paper. Towards the culmination of the paper, a structured roadmap is presented to guide future scholars and practitioners venturing into the realm of megalithic research. This roadmap highlights critical milestones, methodological nuances, and ethical imperatives within the often-overlooked domain of megalithic studies.
