Abstract:
The paper aims to demonstrate that access to capital and cultural resources shapes kinship and the idea of community in an urban space. Using the Marwaris of Hyderabad, treated as a mercantile community with their origin in Rajasthan, the paper argues that the category has expanded after they attempted to consolidate their identity in the 20th century. The credit pool and resources of the community have attracted new members to identify with the community and claim kin ties in Hyderabad. These kin ties extend outside Rajasthan as origin, i.e., in parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Marwari identity is regional and linguistic, but the community in Hyderabad consists of members who do not share the language. Using ethnography as a method, the paper argues that the kinship of Marwaris in Hyderabad is impacted by politics of identity, capital and cultural resources. The associational endeavour of the community not only consolidates the larger Marwari identity but also the sub-castes within them. Another aspect which the paper will focus on is the occupational dynamics of the non-mercantile castes who come to identify with Marwaris after their recent migration out of Rajasthan.
