Abstract:
In the discourse on ‘local’ and ‘global’ the issues about tribal identity and its associated knowledge system are at the center, both in academic scholarships as well as in socio-political platforms. However, there has been dirt of academic exploration in terms of tribal identity and traditional knowledge in the case of Lachung, North Sikkim which is a part of the eastern Himalayas and also falls under the protected area as per the Foreigners (Restricted Areas) Order of 1963. Furthermore, the increasing popularity of these areas in terms of tourist destinations and simultaneously the decline of years-old traditional agro-pastoral practices and historical trade with Tibet due to evolving climate conditions and the closer of the Indo-Tibetan border after Indo-Sino war in the year 1962 has put this region in the crossroad. This paper aims to comprehend the ramifications of these shifts on the community's socio-cultural practices and identity. Engaging in an ethnographic investigation of both observation and interviews with locals in Lachung and a comprehensive examination of literature, the paper further delves into the community's transformation, examining how contemporary economic alterations impact traditional socio-cultural norms and the very essence of the place. The paper is positioned within a broader theoretical understanding that addresses tribal identity and its challenges in the face of globalization especially as they resort to tourism and the evolving aspirants of the younger generations.
