Abstract:

Throughout history, knowledge has stemmed from both local, which is experience-based understanding and the academic, which is research-driven inquiry. However, tension arises when local knowledge is seen as unscientific and academic knowledge as impractical. Recognizing and navigating this tension is crucial for fostering a more holistic understanding of the world. A collaborative approach called transdisciplinary research seeks to bridge the gap between local and academic knowledge. Academics partnering with indigenous communities, i.e. sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation, and traditional medicine, exemplify transdisciplinary research. This integration of local knowledge with scientific rigor yields culturally appropriate and ecologically sound solutions. This paper argues for a shift towards transdisciplinary research, where local communities and academics collaborate by co-creating research agendas and methodologies of both kinds of knowledge. By working together, local communities and academics can create solutions that are more effective, sustainable, and equitable for all.
