Abstract:
‘Political reading’ or a countercritique of Balaš’s „A Crusade for Social Anthropology“
In his recent article, Nikola Balaš purports to offer ‘political reading’ of my contribution to understanding of the quest to establish social anthropology during the post-communist era. Instead, he created a mythology of a strawman whose character must be killed. First, he looks for factual mistakes which equals to demagogy because he tries to question the generally accepted thesis that there was no social anthropology in communist bloc countries. In the second part of his purported critique, he employs Bourdieu’s idea to support his wishful thinking that I followed some mischievous strategy. In fact, I have always clearly stated that I preferred social anthropology because of its truly scientific character and that its institutionalization was highly desirable. One could simply ignore such misreading of facts if this mythology were not presented as scientific. Instead of doing painstaking fieldwork the alarming trend among the new generation of would-be anthropologists is armchair re-chewing distortion.
