Abstract:

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hematological genetic disorder with prevalence ranging from 1 % to as high as 55% in India. Lack of any state-led public health programs for screening, treatment and management of the disease in India, until recently, makes SCD a grave public health problem with gaps in screening and comprehensive care. Therefore, an implementation study was thereby taken up by Indian council of Medical Research to address these gaps. The study was conducted in SCD endemic, Kandhamal district of Odisha, India from Oct 2019 to April 2024. With a quasi-experimental study design the study aimed at creating a sustainable treatment and comprehensive management model for SCD and implementing it at peripheral health care level by community mobilization, partnership building and strengthening public health system so that SCD patients can be screened and managed. The current paper discusses the field work experiences of the researcher along with challenges faced while conducting the said implementation research and subsequent cohort follow-up study in Odisha.
