Abstract:
Today, the world is witnessing crises at manifolds. One of the crises that is haunting humanity is the food security issue. Due to environmental degradation and Anthropocene activities, we are on the verge of collapse. Food which is the basic unit for the survival of living beings forms one of the most important contemporary issues. In anthropological research, the study of food has consistently been crucial for comprehending the culture, traditions, and identity of any community, particularly when examining tribal societies. This paper will present the importance of reviving traditional local food systems in order to tackle the issue of food security. The study primarily looks at the local food traditions and dietary patterns of the tribal people of Jharkhand. Their traditional knowledge of food preparation and food items can be considered valuable in reviving tribal food practices which are also considered sustainable. The indigenous knowledge system of food will allow community participation and will also foster the relationship between man and nature. These local foods when placed in a global frame help in generating new ideas, techniques, and innovation for the growth, reconstruction, and reinvention of local food creating a path for their preservation. Preserving traditional food systems will also support sustainable farming, support the ecosystem, and safeguard biodiversity. Methodologically, it will be a qualitative study that will focus on traditional knowledge of food patterns and their interlinkage with food security and food availability.
