Abstract:
Aspirations and identities are shaped through interactions with social and cultural contexts (Appadurai, 2004). For Dalit and tribal students, the TSWREIS school environment serves as a powerful catalyst, nurturing aspirations and the Swaero identity through various activities, programs, and festivals. This paper adopts an ethnography approach, utilizing participant observation to explore the formation of identities within TSWREIS schools. It draws on anthropological fieldwork conducted from October 2022 to March 2024 in social welfare (Dalit) and tribal welfare schools in Telangana, India.
Visuals and paintings within the school space play a pivotal role in producing the cultural meaning of their aspirations and identities. Every TSWREIS school wall is adorned with the ten commandments of the Swaeros, which students diligently follow in their daily lives. These photographs also depict their vision of modernity and becoming cosmopolitan moral citizens (Wendy, 2003; Ong, 2006; Nakassis, 2016; Lukose, 2009). Their idea of modernity and cosmopolitanism includes aspiring to attend premier engineering colleges like IIT, adopting modern dress and hairstyles, and owning smartphones. However, they also strive to be modern moral citizens who balance aspirations for cosmopolitanism with their traditions, culture, and language.
These students firmly believe that education can eradicate poverty, provide a ‘Good Life’ (Fisher, 2014), and eliminate discrimination against Dalit or tribal individuals. They see themselves as ‘agents’ of social change within their communities. This paper explores how TSWREIS schools, through their unique environment and emphasis on the Swaero identity, foster these aspirations and identities among Dalit and tribal students, blending modernity with cultural traditions.
