Abstract:
The study highlights why only women are potters and the initiative taken to preserve this cultural heritage. This paper is purely qualitative one employing both primary and secondary sources of data collection. An active participation observation was employed to have in-depth face to face interact with the informants.The main Objectives are
1. The relationship between women and the mother goddess is viewed as a possible reason for the designation of pottery as women’s work, a divine gift to women.
2. Pottery is considered ‘women’s work’ in the culture examined
The Oinam considered making pot is a divine gift to women. The Oinam villagers were also blessed by their mother goddess with a good clay source.
Among the Oinam only women are potters man cannot be potter.
