Abstract:

In xochitl, In cuicatl, singing, poetry and speech; communication with the sacred. A proposal from the Nahua worldview. Did the Nahua people of the 16th century really adopt a notion of poetry or song as understood by western culture? Alfredo López Austin and Mercedes Montes de Oca proposed an analysis of diphrasisms based on an approach that is based on the worldview of the Nahua people. Some nahua diphrasisms, understood as an identity of Nahuatl culture, can be a tool to get closer to the philosophy of those who created the artistic manifestations of the 16th century. Although, for the ancient Mexicans there was no word to define philosophy, we can search in the song-dances transcribed by the noble Nahuas gathered by Sahagún, a worldview that explains existence itself, as Miguel León Portilla has stated. In the Nahuatl language, the semantic meaning has a close relationship with the context in which the words are used: both geographical, temporal and the same place where the interlocutors are and who they are addressing. The song, cuica, the word, tlatoli, can be associated with the flower, xóchitl, and its semantics change depending on the contexts. In this presentation I intend to show how semantic and metaphorical meanings change according to these contexts to open speeches, prayers, songs, and a whole set of dramatic representations. Through the confrontation of the written and the visual, for example in the Nahua codices, ethnographic sources and dance-songs collected by Sahagún and the Nahua nobles in the 16th century, I will try to show these diverse semantic meanings that are integrated through rituals and communicative forms.
