Abstract:
This paper scrutinises the identities of commissioned women soldiers in the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA). Since the formation of the ZNA forty years ago, there has been a lacuna in the literature concerning the identities and experiences of women soldiers. Drawing on qualitative methods, the paper untangles the complexities and fluidity of identities in a military setting, where women soldiers ‘perform’ a seemingly scripted military identity marked by their ascribed feminine identity. This paper established that women practice soldiering in shifting contexts with clear gendered boundaries. Women’s situated experiences in the ZNA infuse fluid and fluctuating military identities. The paper further illuminates how stereotypical gendered cultural constructions in the army destabilise women’s military identities.
