Recent years have seen a shift in the research paradigm and a new focus on the protective factors and sources of resilience for the refugee mental health. Instead of the traditional focus on vulnerability and pathology, this new research direction strongly emphasizes the socio-ecological construct and contextualization of resilience, as a product of personal qualities and resources, supportive environments, cultural context, and sufficient resources that can help individuals or communities to overcome traumatic experiences and daily stressors.
Research on psychological resilience within refugee experiences has the potential to be of great benefit to clinicians and all professionals working with this populations, leading them to understand the potential sources of strength, specific to these groups, and to produce culturally and gender appropriate mental health interventions and services.
To this end, this article will explore, what are the main protective factors, resources and processes, at the individual, family, community and cultural level, that support their strength, positive adaptation, and resilience, and it will present a review of effective refugee mental health interventions and treatment methods.
