Abstract:
Since 1990, archaeologists in Colombia have worked on different Preventive Archeology or Contract Archeology projects, as it is known in other countries. Due to the above, several museums, houses of culture, among other places, have presented a great increase in cultural material. Warehouses intended to protect archaeological material, but they are full so this situation has caused great detriment to the cultural and archaeological heritage.
Recognizing the amount of cultural material found in different archeology projects, and the lack of spaces to recieve them, it´s a problem that has been observed worldwide. As a result of the research carried out, it has been found that many of the museums, archaeological sites, and even the companies contracting for preventive archeology projects, have paid attention to the issue, adapting cellars, warehouses, houses and ancient enclosures, to receive, protect, conserve, and investigate the different cultural and archaeological remains that result from the different construction projects.
This problem exposed in different parts of the world is also present in Colombia, particularly in museums, houses of culture, universities, and even private homes, without spaces to store the material from archeology projects carried out in construction work.
In the last 20 years, the municipality of Medellín and the surrounding municipalities (Copacabana, Barbosa, Girardota, Bello, Medellín, Caldas, Envigado and La Estrella) that are part of the Aburrá Valley, have carried out different archeology projects, which have generated an exponential increase in cultural material, and today it has nowhere to rest.
For this reason, this paper will be discussed about new spaces that enable to conduct to the protection of cultural heritage, starting in the city of Medellín - Colombia, integrating a multidisciplinary team made up of: archaeologists, conservators, restorers, social professionals, museologists, among other scientists; to support the work of protection, safeguarding and research.
