Several studies have noted a correlation between the increase in anti-vaccination advocacy and a subsequent stagnation or decline in vaccination rates for certain diseases. It seems highly unlikely that the current trend towards vaccine hesitancy will change in the near future. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these concerns, prompting a deeper investigation into the underlying reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Understanding the motivations behind individuals´ hesitancy towards vaccines is crucial groundwork for developing interventions to address this issue. The utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been identified as a potential contributor to the rise of vaccine scepticism and hesitancy. However, the relationship between CAM and vaccine refusal is complex and not straightforward. To deepen our understanding of the origins of vaccine hesitancy, particularly its connection to CAM advocacy, a more comprehensive and rigorous investigation is necessary. The objective of this study is to explore the factors that elucidate the link between CAM usage and scepticism towards vaccination using a mixed-method approach. The research aims to identify the beliefs, motivations, and intentions of individual CAM users regarding vaccination. The findings of this study confirm previous research indicating that CAM users are more likely to be vaccine hesitant compared to CAM non-users. However, examining data provides a more nuanced understanding of this relationship. The findings suggest to policymakers that regulating CAM would not significantly affect vaccine hesitancy, as CAM is linked to, but does not seem to be the direct cause of, decisions to reject vaccines. Instead, the primary concern lies in people´s distrust of the expert system, predominantly represented by medical professionals.
