This research falls within an educational, artistic, and socio-political perspective and aims to produce a transdisciplinary teaching material based on Afro-Brazilian dances for elementary school teachers in the city of Contagem in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The goal is to encourage the encounter with ancestral and Afro-diasporic identity, utilizing the framework of Law 10.639/03, which mandates the inclusion of "Afro-Brazilian History and Culture" in the school curriculum. In this sense, the proposal is to empower educators to teach more inclusively and consciously, promoting cultural diversity and respect for Afro-Brazilian history and culture in classrooms, thereby fulfilling the law's requirements and contributing to a more pluralistic and egalitarian education.
According to 2010 data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the city of Contagem in Minas Gerais has an estimated 59.2% Black population, with 947 individuals from traditional communities or peoples registered in the E-SUS system (SMS/2021 source), including the Quilombola Arturos Community, certified as a remnant community by the Palmares Cultural Foundation. According to lawyer, philosopher, professor, and current Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship of Brazil, Silvio Almeida, there is significant structural racism in our social fabric. Throughout history, this nefarious fact has promoted the subjugation of identities and visibilities. Although there are undeniably great Black artists in Brazil, many cultural expressions of Black people are considered inferior and of little relevance. All of this has had a pernicious impact on the identity development of Black and mixed-race adolescents and young people in Minas Gerais. Therefore, it seems evident that the Black population of Contagem needs to reconnect with the histories and knowledge that represent the strong African influence in our culture.
