Since becoming the Editor-in-Chief at American Anthropologist, the editorial collective with whom I work has developed an ethos of generosity that guides our processes and decision-making. For instance, rather than claiming excellence by the number of submissions we reject, we measure our success by how many papers we support to publication. The stance that is founded in generosity and care is one that explicitly questions many taken-for-granted habits affecting the editorial process. This paper will discuss some of the specific outcomes of our practices, and potential implications for this, and other journals as we navigate the continually changing publishing landscape we occupy.
