Abstract:
Climate change causes survival challenges for local people in Bangladesh. The growing vulnerabilities from the different types of climatic vulnerabilities such as cyclone, irregular flooding, salinity, and water stagnation are responsible for increasing concerns over community sustainability. Some of the marginalized households from vulnerable socioeconomic conditions face the sudden and slow onset displacement from their ancestral home. A significant number of them moves in the streets of Dhaka after passing a complex journey. Among these internally displaced people, women encounter the most difficult livelihood experiences in Dhaka city. Grounded on this research argument, this paper focuses on the transformative justice perspective for community sustainability in Bangladesh. As the major data sources for the paper, an ethnographic study is pursued in gathering the journey of women climate victims and their current socioeconomic and cultural conditions in a street of Dhaka city. The expected findings of the study indicate that the marginalized groups of people such as women have been experiencing the growing sufferings from climatic vulnerabilities and their livelihood challenges in a street of Dhaka city. These livelihood is not compatible with the sustainability perspective which has two dimensions: (i) in-situ adaption of local people and (ii) rights to cities related to climate change adaptation. Only the application of transformative justice can be helpful to promote this perspective for ensuring the gendered justice. As part of this justice perspective, the procedural inclusive perspective can be helpful for ensuring the right to city in sustainable development.
