The municipality of Sauze di Cesana is a rural city, with a pastoral tradition inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by menhirs in the area. It is located at 1.560 meters in the Western Alps on the Italy-France border. It includes the villages of Bessè Alto, Bessè Basso, Grange Sises, Rollieres, the Argentera Valley and scattered houses.
The water problem, with the year 2009, has been getting worse due to strong frosts in the winter months, scarcity of snow and rain, alternating with sudden and violent summer, autumn and spring storms, accompanied by strong wind gusts.
This anomalous climate phenomenon has had a negative impact on cattle breeding, sheep breeding and pastoral practices in High Valley. The most serious event occurred on 24 -08-23: a heat storm suddenly discharged over 60 mm of rain (about 60 1 liter bottles poured on a square meter), resulting in the swelling of the Ripa stream. Large boulders have fallen on the access road to the Argentera Valley, that has become inaccessible to rescue vehicles except by helicopters. Shepherds lost most of their livestock and the “granges” were destroyed. Spring 2024 weather is also abnormal, with days of red alert, today this Valley is monitored by drones.
Only the shepherds who own large meadows near to their stables, are starting to keep the cattle in the village, without climbing to the pastures, with repercussions on road traffic and the streets are dirty of manure .
These signs indicate a change in pastoral habits of alpine population towards permanent livestock in farm.
