Amani is a great poet of the Yi nationality of China who lived in the Southern and Northern dynasties. She played the role of teacher in ancient Yi people’s three in one system of governance: "monarch", "minister", and "teacher". The Yi people all over the past dynasties respected her very much, called her the ancestor, and respected her as "Hengyamani", that is to say, Amani was the god of heaven, the daughter of heaven, and the outstanding representative of the Yi people in ancient times. Most of Yi ancient books were written in the form of poetry. In them there are traces of pictures as text and pictures as characters. From this we can see that the Yi primitive painting is the predecessor of Yi writing, that is, Yi characters are gradually transformed from pictography to the mature characters we have witnessed today. In many ancient Yi books, there are also a large number of paintings. Though they maintained certain arbitrariness and folk lore nature in the presentation, they demonstrated the characteristics of narratives and instructions, even contained some standard programs. The painting art of the Yi people shows its unique painting style and its deep cultural meanings.
