This proposal aims to present observations from an ethnography being conducted in a Housing Complex in Recife, Pernambuco’s capital, situated in the Northeast region of Brazil. Constructed through the "Minha Casa, Minha Vida" [My House, My Life] program, a Brazilian public housing policy, this development represents an achievement of the Movimento de Luta nos Bairros e Favelas - MLB [Movement for Struggle in Neighborhoods and Slums]. In 2012, over 400 families united in occupying land belonging to the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), organized by the MLB. Many of these individuals inhabited palafitas [stilt houses] in areas prone to flooding in mangrove swamps, as well as other inhospitable areas, seeking the right to decent housing. In April 2023, the first apartments were delivered to the residents, and five months later, a project called Ruy Frazão Sustentável [Ruy Frazão Sustainable] began, which encompasses community-based solid waste management, urban agriculture, generating income and environmental education. In light of this, we explore local perspectives on social movements, sustainable development, environmental racism, afroecology, and black feminism.
