Movement, i.e. the shifting of spaces, frames and places is atypical to our social world. The paper discusses displacement and migration in the realm of not just the choices made by immigrants or internal migrants but rather how migrants rationalize such choices. Anthropology has unique point of view in locating how one comes to rationalize the moment that they choose to move from one’s home to the unfamiliar. We also discuss the manifestation of such choices once the movement is completed and how defamiliarized space is made familiar and often reframed as the home that one has given up in a new space. Jacintha who works in Montreal, Canada as a nurse decided to move from Kerala in 2022 to augment her income with her family. The initial plan was to return home after earning a substantial amount of money which wouldn’t be possible in Kerala. However, with passing time, gendered notions of home emerged as Jacintha decided to stay in Canada than return. Over time, she was able to convince her husband that ‘homing desire’ is better fulfilled in their life in Montreal. In Kolkata, Felix Tham who trains young boys in various traditional martial arts practices in Tangra Chinatown is unable to provide for his family. He is well known as a celebrated Dragon Dance expert. Felix is called to put up performances in martial arts and Dragon dance in Malaysia, Singapore and even Melbourne, Australia. But it is never enough to sustain his family of 3 in the city. In 2021, Felix Tham finally boarded a flight to Montreal and began to work as waiter belonging to a family of Indian-Chinese restaurant owner who had migrated earlier. While the immigrant families may never meet their stories intertwine and tell a tale about migration decisions shaping their lives.
