Abstract:
This paper will strive to revive some of the experiences of domestic workers during the covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns in the capital city of Delhi in India. Caught between gated communities, patronizing gestures as well as the systemic unrecognition from the state, domestic workers were put to everyday regulations and disciplining of the body and their movement. I argue that the ‘scientific approaches’ to dealing with the Covid-19 infections reinforced a social distancing which breached many 'polite' gestures and practices. As domestic workers combat boundaries of various scales- policy, at the realm of work as well as everyday life, I ask what was it to walk into homes in the aftermath of a breaking point like the lockdown in India? What realms of public memorializing is possible of the subaltern experience of a space so private and intimate, yet is a workplace for the other? As homes continue to be spaces which are intimately guarded, what worldview does the subaltern offer as they traverse many worlds, many lives and a post-pandemic world?
