Abstract:
A myriad of elements, including cultural norms, social institutions, family dynamics, peer influences, economic conditions, political structures, and technological advancements, all play a role in shaping the social well-being of the older population. Among these, mental health is a pivotal factor, significantly impacting elderlies’ lives. This study aims to uncover the often-overlooked realities that affect the mental health of the elderly residing in care homes in Lucknow, India.
Fundamentally, the tapestry of social interactions and relationships profoundly influences individuals' perceptions of the world and their interactions with others. Fifty older individuals from two distinct care facilities were personally interviewed, ensuring heterogeneity among the older population across gender, caste, and class. An unstructured interview schedule served as the primary tool. Findings indicate that mental health challenges are often overlooked as medical issues. Historically, these challenges have been perceived merely as symptoms of old age by families and society. However, despite this prevailing attitude, a shift is noticeable among some individuals. Due to advancements in medical knowledge and increased awareness about mental health, a few participants are beginning to acknowledge symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Nonetheless, many are reluctant to label themselves as experiencing mental health issues.
