At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century field studies , which were usually conducted by stationary and expeditionary methods, started due to a number of Armenian devotees. Nowadays, the expeditionary method is especially popular.
Until recently, the main subject of ethnographic studies in Armenia was the rural settlement. Meanwhile, not only settlements are scientific sources for ethnography. In that sense, the ethnographer's participation in archaeological excavations is of great importance.
In Armenia, in the mid-20th century, when the foundations for modern ethnography were already laid, great work was done in terms of the development of ethnography as a science. Noted ethnographers and culturologists (Yu. Mkrtumyan, E. Margaryan and others) revised the old models of culture classification. Some time later, many valuable works were created on tangible and intangible culture of the Armenians, different historical-ethnographic regions, theoretical and methodological issues of ethnography.
After the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, the orientation of ethnographic research underwent significant changes. New research approaches and methods began to be used. In addition to the study of traditional cultural complexes, new research topics appeared in the focus of Armenian ethnography: anthropology of socio-cultural transformations and their manifestations (poverty, property polarization, population migration), anthropology of war and ethnic conflicts, political anthropology, etc. The issues of history, theory and methodology of science are also in the center of attention of Armenian ethnographers. The Russian publication of the volume entitled "Armenians" (Moscow, 2012) is one of the most significant successes for Armenian ethnography in recent years. It makes the latest achievements of both traditional and modern Armenian ethnography complete, and presents all the main fields of Armenian cultural heritage at a high scientific level, which is an important step on the way of popularization and internationalization of Armenian cultural heritage.
Ethnographic museology is directly related to ethnography. Ethnography is not just the collection of material and empirical description, it is a phase of scientific analysis. The scientific presentation of the material to both scientific circles and common people with different perceptions, tastes and preferences is also very important.
Currently, the world has changed radically, everything is mobile and interconnected. The current issue of Armenian ethnography is as follows: what is the nature of local culture and ethnic features in a globalizing and then territorializing world.
