This paper focuses on the ways that culinary methods and practices, such as cooking techniques and practices, interact to shape identity in the diaspora communities. Though it varies, the culinary traditions of each group sharing a shared geographic location tend to be nearly identical. The term food culture refers to the methods used in a certain community for food processing, preparation, and consumption. For diasporic communities, maintaining traditional eating patterns is one of the means of maintaining group identity. Thus, through a qualitative method of inquiry, interviews were conducted to understand the food culture of the Meiteis of Assam, India. Special emphasis is given on the women folk and their knowledge as repositories of culture. The discussion also illustrates how identity is created, formed and preserved in day-to-day activities.
