Abstract:

The United States is heavily reliant on fossil fuels and is a leading producer of oil and gas. Texas’s economy is also dependent on the oil and gas industry. Unlike the rest of the United States, Texas has an independent power grid which is the infrastructure that distributes power throughout the state. As the burning of fossil fuels continue to increase climate change in Texas and throughout the world, the demand for power increases. The Texas power grid is unstable and unable to effectively distribute the power, resulting in devastating outages in extreme weather and rationing. Unlike many countries, the United States does not, by and large, provide a social safety net. For example, health care is usually dependent on employment. In Texas, many are reliant on the oil and gas industries for employment, especially in rural Texas. Politicians funded by the oil and gas industry are reluctant to support the reduction of the use of fossil fuels or reform the power grid. They frighten their constituents with job loss in the energy sector to gain their support in elections despite the widespread natural disasters that are devastating rural Texas caused by climate change. Uncoupling basic survival needs from employment in Texas and reducing the ability of moneyed interests to dominate the actions of politicians would begin to correct the imbalance of power that has led to fossil fuel driven climate change, continuous natural disasters, and a power delivery infrastructure that is inadequate and unreliable. This project can draw inspiration from egalitarian societies that more evenly distribute essential recourses and political power and appeal to the values of rural Texans who, while having a strong individualist ethic, also value mutual aid.
