Abstract:

The Hamar tribe has been a focal point for researchers since the mid-20th century. The most significant expeditions were led in the 1970s and afterward by anthropologists Jean Lydall and Ivo Stecker. Building upon this legacy, our expeditions in 2021-2024 focused attention on the impact of anthropologists' presence on the tribe's perception of their cultural heritage. The research uncovered the emergence of a new layer of narrative tradition, which involves the figure of the anthropologist. Additionally, we observed a reassessment of native traditions amidst the increasing influence of Christian churches and tourism in the region. The tribe's tradition finds itself navigating between superficial tourist attention, which overlooks its essence, focusing only on "the show"; and the efforts of Protestant missionaries advocating for a reinterpretation of tradition within a monotheistic framework. In this complex landscape, anthropologists emerge as neutral external agents sought out by the tribe for assistance in reevaluating their cultural heritage. Through sustained interest in traditional culture, anthropologists stimulate reflections on its significance and preservation. Through contact with anthropologists tribe members recall already lost rituals, sacred roles, and cultural phenomena, noting the growing influence of the outside world on the traditional way of life and assessing it. Despite the challenges, traditional Hamar culture has the potential to revive, showcasing both resilience against cultural homogenization and adaptability to contemporary realities. This phenomenon underscores the intricate and multifaceted dynamics characterizing the evolution of the traditional culture in the modern era.
