In some common knowledge courses of anthropology in Beijing Foreign Studies University, a university mainly built for foreign language education, African knowledge become very important and challengeable. For studies in such a university, both kinds of courses of anthropology and African studies are very important. Since anthropology provides an angle of view to understand the world, and Africa is a very important part of the world. Though the students have learned Africa geography and history in their high school, they still lack a deep understanding of Africa. Therefore, Africa, as a whole, is a typical “other” in these anthropological courses from the very beginning.
