Abstract:
Historically, the ethical concerns surrounding ethnography stemmed from its intimate attachment to the colonial encounter. While the ethics of representation are always a factor to be considered in any ethnographic research, the rise of militarized-state autocracies in the post-colonial moment, particularly in the Global South, presents new ethical challenges to the navigation of ethnography. Seen as a threat to the discursive hegemony of the State, ethnographic research engenders danger towards both researchers and interlocutors. As such, this paper reexamines both the academic and political ethical duties of the ethnographer while exploring different methods to maintain the safety of the researcher and their interlocutors.
