Abstract:
Indigenous peoples, drawing on their traditional ecological knowledge and management systems, offer alternative solutions in response to environmental changes and degradation resulting from unsustainable human practices. However, conservation and Indigenous rights policies have traditionally clashed in the ancestral domains of the Ayta Magbukon residing on the Bataan Peninsula. Thus, this proposed study aims to identify and explore the issues concerning the territorial claims of the Ayta Magbukon of Bataan on their Ancestral Domain (AD). The results of this study will serve as supplementary evidence to support their application for the Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT). Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to broader conversations about the historical and ongoing struggle of Ayta communities in asserting their rights over ancestral domains. Moreover, it highlights the significance of acknowledging and respecting Indigenous peoples' rights to self-determination, collective ownership, and their aspirations to control their ancestral territories. Lastly, I believe that when Indigenous lands are protected, the entirety of forest lands stands to benefit from protection and sustainability measures, ensuring the preservation of valuable ecosystems for current and future generations.
