Abstract:
Founded in 1989, the Portuguese Anthropological Association is somehow mid-way both in size and history between the largest and oldest associations and the young and recent ones. We will discuss our experience of dealing with multiple internal traditions – including confronting the legacy of late colonialism – while establishing international interlocution in multiple fronts and along several channels of connection: the Portuguese speaking channels, mostly with ABA in Brazil and with Lusophone African countries through other associations; the Iberian channels, with Galician, Catalan and Spanish Federation connections; the E.U. universe, especially with EASA; the Social Anthropology -UK connections; and the interlocution with the AAA, and the World Anthropology associations.
I will address some of the formal, material and conceptual challenges involved in this process of managing internal diversity and articulation with international diversity.
