In the hyper-urbanized Gulf region, many families in Bahraini villages struggle to access public housing units due to extended delays, leading to a lack of trust in the government's public housing schemes. After spending years as a political critic, a Bahraini virtual public figure, operating under a pseudonym, has effectively built trust and mobilized financial resources from a large follower base to support charitable campaigns aimed at rebuilding deteriorating houses in these villages. By leveraging social media platforms and FinTech applications, these digital fundraising campaigns have assumed state-like roles leading to the empowerment of underprivilege families and marginalized urban populations. This digital ethnography seeks to re-evaluate the overemphasized rentier condition of the Gulf by highlighting the urban agency of people living in peri-urban areas of Bahrain.
