Abstract:
Philippine anthropology began in 1922 with American scholars studying indigenous cultures during colonization. However, it wasn't until 1977 that the national anthropological association, Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao (UGAT), was established, primarily by members from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where the first undergraduate anthropology degree was offered. UGAT has since led the advancement of anthropology in the Philippines through annual conferences, its journal Aghamtao, policy engagement, advocacy, and public awareness initiatives. In the past decade, UGAT expanded globally by joining the World Council of Anthropological Associations, presenting papers in joint WCAA and International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences webinars, and organizing international conferences. This paper examines UGAT's 46-year contribution to Philippine anthropology and highlights key moments enriching social science consciousness through anthropological discourse and praxis in the country.
