Through a birth record on board of a vessel bringing migrant-settlers from Madeira to southern Angola in 1884, plus a tomb found in Humpata (Angola), Maria India reveals her existence to anthropologist Cristiana Bastos -- and leads the way to account for the complex history of settlements, resistance and inter-ethnic relations in southern Angola since the end of the 19th century. Filmed on location with descendants of settlers and other characters.
