This paper explores the historical development, varied themes, and the socio-economic and technological factors that have influenced the evolution of rickshaw art. It focuses the significance of rickshaw art as a cultural artefact that both mirrors and impacts the identity of Bangladesh. Originally introduced as a convenient mode of transportation during the colonial period, rickshaws, which were initially pulled by hand and later operated by pedals and batteries, quickly transformed into mobile platforms for local artists to showcase their skills. The art form has undergone significant changes, reflecting the country's trajectory through post-colonialism, rapid urbanization, and globalization. The research utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating historical documentation, visual analysis, and interviews with rickshaw artists and owners. The study explores how rickshaw art has managed to balance the preservation of cultural heritage with the adoption of innovative elements, thus mirroring the wider societal dynamics between tradition and modernity.
The study emphasizes the transformation of rickshaw art, progressing from basic, customary patterns to intricate storylines that depict the hopes, prevalent culture, and even political opinions of the people in Bangladesh. This study examines the influence of technological progress, such as the implementation of motorized vehicles and digital design tools, on the methods of production and artistic preferences in rickshaw art. Furthermore, the research focuses on the difficulties presented by modernization, such as urban regulatory policies and the evolving economic landscape, which endanger the continuation of this art form. The paper contends that rickshaw art should be acknowledged as a living heritage and necessitates dynamic conservation strategies. It highlights the importance of adopting a well-rounded strategy that promotes creativity and protects the originality of rickshaw art, allowing it to flourish as a symbol of Bangladesh's cultural strength and ingenuity.
