Ramnagar Varanasi's Ramlila stands as a unique spectacle, intertwining the realms of theatre and faith within the fabric of its month-long performance. Employing visual ethnography and personal interviews, this study delves into the multifaceted nature of Ramlila as both a theatrical extravaganza and a sacred pilgrimage site. At the heart of Ramnagar's Ramlila lies a transformative experience where the boundaries between entertainment and spiritual devotion blur. Through the lens of visual ethnography, this research seeks to unravel the layers of significance embedded within the enactment of the Ramayana epic. Personal interviews with performers, organisers, and attendees shed light on the profound impact of Ramlila as an environmental theatre, immersing participants in a narrative that transcends mere performance.
Drawing from excerpts of fieldwork, this study explores the metamorphosis of Ramlila from a theatrical production to a site of pilgrimage, where devotees embark on a journey of spiritual awakening and cultural immersion. By examining the intricate interplay between theatre and faith, this research illuminates the dynamic nature of Ramlila as a living tradition, perpetuating ancient narratives while adapting to contemporary contexts. In essence, Ramnagar's Ramlila serves as a microcosm of the rich tapestry of Indian culture, where tradition and modernity converge in a vibrant celebration of spirituality and artistic expression. Through a nuanced analysis of this cultural phenomenon, this study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interrelationships between theatre, religion, and society in contemporary India.
